Jang Su Jang

April 30, 2011

I think I’ve found a favorite Korean restaurant in my area!  I haven’t tried the BBQ at Jang Su Jang yet but everything else we’ve tried is great.

Love the banchan.  The jap chae is always one of my faves.

Based on Yelp reviews, we ordered the seafood pancake.  It had tons of seafood mixed in and tasted great.  It tasted the best when it was still sizzling after it was brought to our table.

My parents and I all ordered the dolsot bibimbap.  My Dad loves when the rice burns on the sides of the bowl and get crunchy.

TM went with a spicy beef noodle soup.  If you can’t tell by the picture, the soup was pretty spicy.  It was temperature hot AND spicy hot!  Just how TM likes his food.

At the end of your meal, everyone gets a little yakult like drink.  These little yogurt drinks are great to cut the heat of the food.  We’ve gone to Jang Su Jang a couple times now and it’s always been packed.  I know this place is good because most of the patrons are Korean.  It’d be wise to make reservations before you go.

99 Chicken!

March 11, 2009

When Jill was here visiting from LA, we wanted to take her to a non-chain restaurant.  There’s no point of travelling if you’re only going to eat at CPK and Chili’s the whole time.  So we ended up at 99 Chicken.   This was only my second time there but they have all sorts of fried chicken goodness on the menu.

We had an order of the saucy chicken.  It looks like it’d be hot and spicy in the picture but the sauce was actually more sweet.

We also tried a few of the regular fried chicken.  I think these are my favorite when dipped in a little salt and pepper.

We also tried the kimchee fried rice which I thought was just alright.

The chicken is good because they don’t fry it until you order so it comes out piping hot.  There is an all you can eat salad bar and white rice too.

Choco Pear

January 20, 2009

My cousin Laureen told me to go to her favorite bakery in my area.  Paris Baguette.  We ate dinner nearby and decided to stop in on the way home if they were still open.  To my surprise, they are open until 11 PM Monday through Saturday and until 10 PM on Sundays!

Most of the breads were sold out at 9 PM but since we were there to pick up dessert, we found what we wanted.  We got one green tea cream cheese bread and one choco pear. (pictured above)  Those are slices of fresh pear on top of the cake!  I love Asian desserts because they are not TOO sweet but still have a lot of flavor.   It was exquisite and beautiful as you can see, and tasted as good as it looks!  I am anxious to go back and try their bread and other cakes.

Athena: Greek Food!

November 6, 2008

I think I have found a new favorite Greek restaurant in the area!!  Athena Grill.  Forget Daphne’s, you get bigger servings here. : )  The pita here was so fluffy and good!  As soon as you sit down you are served with a basket of warm pita and bread with hummous.   Excuse the bad pictures, I forgot my camera at home and took these on my cell.

Boyfriend went with the beef Gyro Plate.  It came with a Greek salad and a side of Greek fries.  The fries were delicious (my dish came with them too) and the gyro had a lot of flavor!  This is what I usually order when we go to Greek restaurants but for some reason I chose something else this night.

I went with the Arnaki Pita which was thinly sliced lamb with onions, tomatoes, spring greens, tzatziki sauce, etc. all wrapped in a pita.  The lamb was semi bland but that might have been because I asked for the wrap without roasted bell peppers and I took off all the Feta cheese.

Our Falafel Mezes was really good!

The grape leaves (dolmades) were pretty good.  Not the best I’ve had but I usually eat homemade ones that Elisa’s Grandma makes… and you know that you can never beat Grandma’s home cooking! ; )
We went home with tons of leftovers and had them for lunch the next day.  I’m excited to go back!

Yuki Sushi

June 3, 2008

It seems like lately, all I’ve been eating is Chinese food or sushi. (not that I’m complaining) A fellow Silicon Valley foodie commented on a previous entry and suggested going to Yuki Sushi just down the street from Santana Row. So go to Yuki Sushi we did!

The moment we sat down Boyfriend mentioned, “I’m really starving.” Poor thing, he had to work overtime last night and didn’t even have time for dinner because he was so busy. All he had in his stomach from the past 24 hours was the snack I made him when he got home from work last night. So… we ordered a lot of food!

I wanted to start out with the yudofu because it was a tiny bit overcast and chilly when we were driving to the restaurant. It was a healthy but tasty choice! Tofu, napa cabbage, shiitake and green onions.

Boyfriend ordered a katsu don which comes with miso soup. I stole a bite of it and it was very good.

We also ordered four rolls: Toshi maki (tuna, salmon, hamachi, cucumber and avocado), Jazz maki (unagi and avocado with soy paper), spicy tuna and negi hama. The Toshi maki had a lot of stuff in it and sounded promising but it was actually just kind of bland.

The fish tasted fresh so I think I’d like to try some nigiri next time. The prices seem very reasonable for the nigiri sushi! I wish the menu listed how many pieces come with each cut. Some are only four, while others are six. If Boyfriend hadn’t ordered the katsu don, he still would’ve been hungry for sure.

I’m glad we went at 11:30 right when the restaurant opened. Before we got our food, there were already about five people who came in to pick up take-out orders and the place was packed when we left. The restaurant is quite cozy so it’s probably better not to go right at prime dining hours, I’d assume.
