A snack, dinner, dessert, then late night dinner

September 22, 2009

This is everything we ate before dinner, for dinner and after dinner…

Needless to say, we pigged out!  Pizza from Ray’s Pizza for our before dinner snack.  Tons of small dishes from Village Yokocho at our izakaya dinner.  Joe’s Pizza as an after dinner snack.  Gelato from GROM for dessert, next door to Joe’s.  It was our last night in NY and it did feel like we walked a mini marathon.  After dessert, the group split up and Joy, Candace, Boyfriend and I walked (yes, we walked again!) to Balthazar’s for a late night dinner.

Mmmm, Balthazar’s deserves its own entry.

Izakaya style

We went to Tanto the other night with my parents and ordered a bunch of delicious food!  The only thing I wish we could’ve returned was the kabocha gratin.  I’m not a fan of gratin to begin with and this was no exception.  The kimchee ishiyakai gohan, okoge – ebi to nasu ankake, gyu tan, shiyo yaki tebasaki (chicken wings), and wakame salad were all great!!  Boyfriend and I had actually ordered three of those dishes the last time we went and we liked them SO MUCH that we ordered them again with my parents for them to try.

Dream Store

May 18, 2008

Boyfriend and I went to Yume-ya (literally translated – dream store) for dinner.  We are in the search for a good sushi place in our new city.  Our requirements are sushi rolls that taste good but don’t break the bank.  We tried Sakura Sushi in downtown Sunnyvale but it was nothing worth posting about.  We also tried Tsunami Sushi in Mountain View with Boyfriend’s parents while they were in town.  Tsunami was better but we wanted to keep searching.

Yume-ya is an izakaya but is also known for their sushi.  We started out with the tofu salad and homemade gyoza.  We chose the karashi mayonnaise dressing for the salad.  It was nice to have a choice!  The homemade gyoza was very flavorful and I would definitely order them again.

We ordered a few rolls (our usual are the tempura/crunchy roll, negi hama,  and spicy yellowtail)  We also went with salmon nigiri for Boyfriend and hamachi nigiri for me! : )  The slices of fish were very fresh and generous!  I was a fan.

I would like to go back again and try other items on the menu.  I’m curious about the Japanese style summer rolls they have.  We’ll have to go back when the weather is milder though.  The place didn’t feel particularly air-conditioned in this record-breaking heat we’ve been having and the water service wasn’t the greatest.
