Saint Cupcake

January 22, 2010

Ummm, did I mention we also ate cupcakes this day?!?

Saint Cupcake on Belmont was a quaint little place.  You feel like you stepped into someone’s house with a bunch of antiques and cupcakes are sold in the back.  So cute!

I got a hot fudge with vanilla cake and  Boyfriend got the peanut butter / chocolate cupcake.  Elisa and Matt got red velvet and said it was the best of them all.  They probably weren’t the best cupcakes I’ve had but I loved the store they were sold in!  The cake was a little on the dry side but I loved the frosting to cake ratio.  Other places have too much frosting.

We did have one negative experience here.  We parked at Zupan’s across the street and did a little shopping.  When we came out, there was a young couple who asked us for money because they needed gas.  We quickly put our head down, mumbled an apology and walked across the street.  The whole time we were in Saint Cupcake, Elisa felt guilty for not giving them money.  The couple moved and stood right outside of Saint Cupcake so Matt mentally decided to give them a couple bucks.  As we were shopping in the store, we noticed the couple had come inside.  The girl walked out right in front of us carrying a big pink box from Saint Cupcake!!!  When we walked out, the couple were a few steps away but the girl deliberately turned and came back to ask us for money again!!  All while holding her box of cupcakes!!  How can she look us in the eye and ask us for gas money while holding a box of cupcakes she had just bought?!?  Unbelievable.

Crumbs Bake Shop

October 13, 2009

You’d think we would have had enough to eat after lunch at Cafe Vida but we just HAD to leave room for dessert!  (Not to mention the fact that we had stopped at 7-11 before heading to Pacific Palisades and all got slurpees and Boyfriend and I got corn dogs as a snack.)

We went to Crumbs Bake Shop in Malibu for cupcakes.  It was cupcake and frosting galore in there!  So many choices!

(From top L going clockwise.)  Boyfriend got a peanut butter chocolate cupcake.  He kept raving about how much he liked it.  I went with an Oreo cupcake.  It was quite boring and the half Oreo on top was soggy.  Next time I’ll be more exciting and not get something so predictable.  Faye got a Snickers cupcake with pieces of Snickers candy bar on top which she said was very good.  Jill got her usual, Red Velvet.  Jill once got a Red Velvet cupcake from Crumbs and said they put buttercream frosting on it instead of cream cheese, the nerve!  She gave them another chance though and this time she approved. : )

Birthday cupcakes!!

September 1, 2009

Jill brought me birthday cupcakes to dinner!!  Boyfriend and I were spending the afternoon at Manhattan Beach and we ran into Jill.  She tried to play it off like she goes there often to hang out.  Although I didn’t remember her ever telling me she went to Manhattan Beach to “go shopping” as she put it, I didn’t think much of it.  Little did I know that she had this cupcake plan in play!

Like a true food blogger, I took a picture of them before I blew out the candles.  They are so cute with the candles!

I chose a red velvet with cream cheese frosting and sprinkles. Mmmmm. : )  Thanks Jill!!

Sugar, Butter, Flour

May 12, 2008

Jill came to visit last week and besides going to the usual shopping places (Gilroy outlets, Santana Row and Valley Fair), she wanted to check out this bakery across the street from my hotel called Sugar, Butter, Flour.  Jill is a red velvet cupcake connoisseur and tries them whenever she can.

This one had pecans on top of the frosting and I liked it because the frosting wasn’t too sweet and wasn’t slathered all over like some other cupcake places.  At $2.50 a pop, it’s a steal compared to Sprinkles!  I believe Jill gave this one 3 stars out of 5.

Cupcake Craze

February 26, 2008

Jill brought over cupcakes for Boyfriend and I the other day… not from the ever-so-popular Sprinkles but from Dots Cupcakes in Pasadena!  I’ve been to Sprinkles a couple times now so it is now time to expand my options.  Sprinkles is good but something about the long line at all hours of the day gives it an elitist feel and the sign on the door is semi-snobby  err, somewhat cute. “Please keep door closed… this helps us maintain the freshness of our cupcakes.”

She took our order over the phone:  I chose Strawberry Shortcake and Boyfriend chose Apple Pie with a caramel swirl on top.  Jill kept stressing how cute the packaging is over the phone so when she brought it over, I got to see how cute the little dots are!

Overall, I might’ve liked the Dots cupcakes better than Sprinkles. *gasp*  I don’t really like overly sweet frosting and sometimes I scrape off some of the Sprinkles frosting because it is just too much.  *double gasp*  Sprinkles are $3.25 a pop and Dots cupcakes are $2.75/EA.  If you’re in the area, perhaps you can judge for yourself and decide which you like better!
