Totally weeeiiirrrdd ice cream

March 25, 2010

By weird I mean prosciutto weird.   Pistachio bacon ice cream weird.  And peanut butter curry weird.   I got sucked in by another episode of  “The Best Thing I Ever Ate” and headed over to Humphry Slocombe for some dessert.  This episode was about the totally unexpected flavors you wouldn’t expect to go together.  Hence the prosciutto ice cream.   If you remember, Boyfriend couldn’t wait to try out Boccalone after seeing it featured on the show.  When Chris Cosentino mentioned his Boccalone prosciutto was mixed in with ice cream at Humphry Slocombe, Boyfriend couldn’t wait to try this out either.

Humphry Slocombe has tons of flavors which get rotated everyday.  They usually offer twelve a day.  Luckily, prosciutto was one of them the day we went!  Boyfriend went with a scoop of prosciutto and ancho chocolate.  Let’s just say the prosciutto ice cream was very weird and interesting.  I don’t know how I feel about meat mixed in with ice cream. There was a little heat to the ancho chocolate but the sweetness of the chocolate probably counterbalanced it.

Kio got “Jesus Juice.”  It is the red wine and Coca-cola flavored sorbet on the right.  I had a little taste and distinctly tasted the red wine flavor.  It was strange tasting red wine in ice cream form.

I love ice cream too much to have my experience ruined by a weird flavor.  I was boring and got Blue Bonnet Vietnamese Coffee ice cream.  It was delicious!  I think we’ll probably stick to Bi-Rite in the future though.

The sign was chained to the lamp post in case someone tried to steal it.  All in all I’m glad we went and I’m glad I tried little tastes of weirdness.

Slice of NY

March 15, 2010

I have always heard about how great Slice of NY is and have read many reviews.  My coworker Richard and I finally grabbed lunch there.  This place was teeny tiny but I LOVED the decor.

It took me back to Manhattan for a split second.

The pizza was awesome with the crust having just the right chewiness.  I’d go again in a heartbeat if I was near Valley Fair but probably wouldn’t make a special trip out there for it.  Shopping anyone??  ; )

Voodoo Doughnuts

March 12, 2010

What is a trip to Portland without going to Voodoo Doughnuts??

I’ve been on this writing hiatus because work has been busy.  I never wrote about one of our most significant stops in Portland.  We had to go to the Voodoo.

We stood in line for what felt like forever.  Doughnuts were supposed to be our breakfast but ended up being more of a lunch because we didn’t make it inside until past noon!

I already knew what I wanted to get before we went.  I got the “No Name” doughnut.  It’s so good that they couldn’t come up with a name for it to do it justice.   Chocolate rice krispies and peanut butter anyone??  We ordered SEVEN doughnuts between the four of us and guess what… we ate ALL OF THEM.   Aaron thought his “Old Dirty Bastard” choice was hilarious.  Matt got the “grape ape” but after one bite each, we thought that was enough.

Of course, we had to get a traditional Voodoo Doll Doughnut!  There is a pretzel stabbing the heart of this doughnut and strawberry jelly oozes out of it…
