Tsukiji Fish Market

This is a really touristy thing to do but I’ve been here twice now and find it amazing.  We woke up at 4:30 AM to go to the Tsukiji Fish Market.

The auction goes from 5 to 6:15 AM and it’s definitely a sight to see and hear!  The auctioneer was going crazy, yelling things and pointing at all the blue fin tuna on the ground.

Some can go for as much as a million yen!  After we watched the auction and walked through the market, we decided to eat a sushi breakfast… at 6:30 AM. : )

There were already a ton of people lined up at the various restauarnts.  Some had over an hour wait but we chose a random one with a shorter line and ended up waiting about 30 – 40 minutes.

All of the restaurants were teeny and only sat about ten people at the most.

I went with the chirashi.  It was absolutely amazing and had a great mix of hamachi, ebi, salmon, kani, maguro, ikura, etc.  The fish was so fresh, it melted in my mouth.

Boyfriend went with the Fuji 7 piece set and got a bonus nigiri  I’m so proud that he ate everything… even the ikura!  The prices at the market restaurants were pretty expensive.  It’s not surprising considering it’s a huge tourist attraction so they can jack up the prices.  The fish was incredible and I’m glad we went!

Waking up at 4:30 AM to go to Tsukiji made for a really long day but it was so worth it!!  As we were walking around the aisles and rows of 500 different kinds of seafood, I could hear the workers muttering, “Get out of the way! Stupid toursits.”  I felt bad for interrupting their regular work day because it must’ve been frustrating having tourists stopping in the middle of a walkway and sticking their camera lenses into everything.  It was a sight to see, a must if you’re in Tokyo and awake at 5 AM!! ; )

Serious? And here I thought they were asking if I wanted to buy some fish. Haha, just kidding. I agree, a trip to Tsukiji is a must if you’re visiting Japan. I skipped the sushi breakfast and headed back to the hotel and went back to bed though.

There’s a line to enter the designated area for the tourists to see the auction area. We got lucky and were in the auction area when the auction started up at 6:00am. It did end up being a really long day, but the sushi breakfast was a great way to start the day. That was some of the freshest sushi I’ve ever had. I have a hard time eating seafood when it is fishy tasting and that normally happens when it is not as fresh. This was really easy to eat for me since it was so fresh. It was definitely a neat experience and great food.
